A Merger with Meaning: The New Milton Lodge

The Barton Court Lodge and Fernhill Lodge have officially united under a new name: The New Milton Lodge. This name was carefully chosen as a revival of the original New Milton Lodge, which ceased operations in 2011. By bringing back this historic name, the combined lodge honors its heritage while symbolizing a fresh start and renewed commitment to the community.

Leadership and Recognition

The renaming ceremony was conducted by Jon Whitaker, the Provincial Grand Master—one of the most senior Freemasons in the country. His presence underscored the importance of the event and demonstrated the organization’s hierarchical structure and leadership commitment.

Whitaker emphasized the significance of the merger, stating: “This was a unique event with the town’s two lodges coming together for the benefit of the wider community. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of all those involved.”

A Rich History Spanning Nearly a Century

The ceremony also provided an opportunity to reflect on Freemasonry’s deep roots in New Milton. The organization’s presence in the town dates back to the 1930s, when members faced the challenge of traveling to Lymington to attend meetings. Over nearly a century, the community of Freemasons has grown and evolved, becoming an integral part of New Milton’s social fabric.

Commitment to Transparency and Community Integration

One of the most important aspects of the ceremony was the lodge’s commitment to addressing misconceptions about Freemasonry. Goff Beck, the lodge spokesman, emphasized that the organization is actively working to dispel myths and build stronger relationships with other community groups and charities.

“It was a great privilege to have the provincial grand master attend to conduct the ceremony,” Beck reflected, highlighting the pride and significance of the event.

An Open Invitation to Join

The New Milton Lodge is not only reviving its legacy but also extending an invitation to the broader community. Gary Anstead, the lodge secretary, encouraged anyone interested in learning more about Freemasonry or becoming a member to participate in their meetings.

This openness reflects a broader shift within modern Freemasonry—moving away from the perception of exclusivity and toward genuine community engagement. The lodge welcomes both new prospective Freemasons and existing members in the area.
